Welcome to everyone following this year's Advent Calendar, and thank you all for your continued support...YOU make it worthwhile. I hope you enjoyed this year's projects as much as I enjoyed putting them together for you.

2 0 1 2 * p o c k e t * c a l e n d a r

You will need:
* 2012 calendar template
* A4 paper
* Card (cereal box)
* Decorative paper
* Embellishments

Step 1: Print out the calendar template onto A4 paper

Step 2: Before cutting out, fold between blue dotted lines. This will divide your A4 sheet into 12 sections. Now cut out Calendar around grey border.

Step 3: Starting between January & August, cut along fold through 3 of the 4 sections. Turn and cut between December & May (see pic).

Step 4: Glue the back of February to the back of March, then glue the back of April to the back of May, and so on until you have glued all the pages, leaving the first and last page a single thickness.

Step 5: Cut out a cover from card using the template as a guide. Decorate, then glue January to the inside front, leaving a 3mm border around outside edge (see picture). Glue December to the back.

The story behind this year's Advent Calendar design...

My daughter came home from school Friday with a Christmas Card design she'd done in class, attached to an order form - £5.50 for 12 prints. Hmm...

The thought of paying that much for printed cards really niggled
me, especially as I haven't bought cards in years. But she was so excited about showing me her design, and about the positive comments she'd received, how could I refuse?

I listen as she explains her technique, then we carefully put the card back in the envelope, and I promise to "sort it out later".

So now it's Sunday, and I have to fill out the order form, and I'm becoming more and more niggled by the minute. I've got to hand it to the company, it's a great idea, but to market children in this way? Justifying it with "your school receives a £1 donation for every pack sold" just felt like bullying to me.

That was it, I decided there and then that, no matter what, I was NOT going to be ordering those cards. I would give the school £1 so they didn't miss out, and some crafting materials as an extra gesture, and a note explaining my donation. Now to tell my daughter...

"Oh, but MUM!"

In my most cheerful voice, I point out that we can scan the picture in and make our own printed cards, and tags, and notepaper and -

"But they put our designs on their website so everyone can buy them!"

Oh jees! I can't bare the thought of my family feeling obliged to buy from a company that charges its designers (no order, no upload of course). As I look into my daughter's pleeading eyes, that's when it hit me...

"Hey Sweetheart, Mummy
can put it on lots and lots of websites, and thousands and thousands of people will see it.
It can be this year's Free Advent Calendar!"

Her face said it all. We had a deal.

The problem for most crafters is, we never seem to have time to do things for ourselves. While it's nice to put others first, sometimes that can be a problem if you are also in the market of selling your design services.

Well, that was another enjoyable Christmas I am pleased to say. A little too short for my liking, but it's quality and not quantity that counts I suppose.

One of the good things about this year is, I prepared the Calendar that far in advance I'd forgetten myself what was behind each window. So that was an unexpected treat for me.

Another was the 40,000 page views it received this year. That's a whopping jump from last year, and I can't thank you all enough for adding it to your Blogs. Let's hope it generated some well-deserved traffic for the designers too.

The object of the game is to swap the green and purple marbles over using only the Knight's Move (1 forward 2 left or right, OR 2 forward 1 left or right).

You will need:
* 2010 calendar template
* A4 paper

S K I T T L E S * V O D K A

I thought I would share this Christmas pressie make, now it's in the lucky recipient's possession (actually it's probably all gone by now), as these Skittles Vodka bottles make a great all-year-round gift. They are incredibly easy to make too. If you're wanting to give it a try, here's the quantities I used, and 'something-you-should-know' before you start.

You will need:
* 70cl Vodka
* 195g Fruits Skittles
* 3 x empty plastic bottles
* funnel
* 3 x paper coffee filters
* 3 x small bottles (20cl)
* Labels & embellishments

Something-you-should-know: I found that, although the Vodka took on the flavour of the orange Skittles it did not take the colour, so I recommend you discard this flavour and stick with Lime, Lemon & Berry flavours as I have done.

Step 1: Seperate the Skittles into 3 piles: greens, yellows, reds & purples, and discard all the orange ones (yes, you can eat them).

Step 2: Measure out equal quantities of Vodka between three plastic bottles (such as empty squash bottles), and drop one pile of the seperated Skittles into each one.

Step 3: Wait. Shake. Wait. Shake. Repeat for approx. 24 hours, or until all the Skittles have dissolved.

Step 4: Filter the Vodka through the coffee filter papers into the Small Bottles (if you don't have these then 2-3 layers of strong kitchen roll works just as well).

Step 5: Add a Label and embellishments. I would strongly recommend that you add the Alc % to the label so the recipient is aware this is pure Vodka

B A U B L E * P I Ñ A T A

With only four days to go until the Big Day, I've had to step the Christmas crafting up a notch or two in attempt to meet all targets. So, yesterday I had my two "I'm bored" echo machines making decorations, while I cracked on with the still-too-long gift list.

And apparently there is a God, because when it came to gluing on the lids of these baubles I had a 'ping' moment. It struck me that the large cavity was screaming out to be filled, so I had them stuff it full of sweets while I ticked another gift off the list. Result!

You will need:
* Old Christmas cards
* Scissors & Glue
* Ribbon
* Sweets

To Make:

Step 1: Using this template, cut out 20 circles from old* Christmas cards

Step 2: Score and fold along triangle lines

Step 3: Glue 5 circles together to form base as shown

Step 4: Glue 10 circles together in a long strip as shown, then glue around base

Step 5: Glue 5 remaining circles together for lid, at the same time attach ribbon between 2 of the circles to make a loop for hanging

Step 6: Fill cavity with sweets or small gifts , then glue lid to top

* I would like to reassure friends & family that none of this year's cards were sacrificed for this project, honest!

J I G S A W * W R E A T H

What do you do with a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle that only has 999 pieces? Make a Christmas Wreath of course!

This quick & easy kids' project takes advantage of the green backing of the jigsaw, so only a bit of glitter glue and sequins is needed to produce a very pleasing result.

You will need:
* Old jigsaw puzzle pieces
* Glue
* Glitter
* Sequins
* Ribbon
* Small plate

Step 1: Using the plate as a template, lay one row of jigsaw pieces around the rim

Step 2: Glue a second layer of jigsaw pieces on top of the first, overlapping the pieces to hold your wreath together

Step 3: Decorate with glitter glue & sequins and a ribbon bow

Step 4: Glue a length of ribbon or cord to the back to make a loop for hanging

P Y R A M I D * B O X

There's plenty of templates out there for making Pyramid Boxes, but personally I find them a lot of faffing around when you have lots to make this time of year. So I came up with this quick and easy way to make mine, and thought I'd share. Do return the favour and leave me a comment if you like it.

Don't forget to

You will need:
* 2 sheets contrasting scrapbook paper
* Card (cereal box)
* Cord or ribbon
* Embellishments
* Imagination!

Step 1: Cut out a square from card. For best results, this should be no bigger than 1/3rd the width of your paper. The smaller the square, the taller your Pyramid will be.

Step 2: If your scrapbook paper isn't already square, cut it to shape.

Step 3: Starting with the outside paper, fold it in quarters as shown, and glue the cardboard square in the centre, matching the corners to the creases (see pic)

Step 4: Cut along creases up to the corners of the cardboard base (red line). Now fold each side into a point (blue arrow) and glue down. If you've used a small cardboard base you may need to trim a little from each side so they don't overhang.

Step 5: Using this folded piece as a template, lay onto second scrapbook paper with wrong-sides together, and mark at corners of base as shown. Join these marks with a rular so you have a square to use as a guide.

Step 6: Cut your second paper to the corner marks and fold & glue as before. Now glue wrong-sides of both pieces together.

Closing your box
Here is where you will need your imagination! I've made 3 variations, but the possibilities are endless. Do leave me a link to your blog entries when you comment, so I can see what you come up with.

Tall Box:
(6x6" scrapbook sheets with 4cm base)
Using the box as a template, I've made a 'lid' that sits on top and holds it closed. Cord attached to two corners is threaded through a hole in the top so it can be hung from the tree.

Maroon Box:
(6x6" scrapbook sheets with 6cm base)
Here I have added eyelets to each side and threaded cord through, attaching the tag to the cord before tying in a bow

Snowflake Box:
(6x6" scrapbook sheets with 6cm base)
I've attached a long length of cord to opposite corners to form a loop, and 2 shorter lengths to the remaining corners, then threaded all through a pony bead and tied the shorter cords in a bow.

P U D D I N G * T A G S

Do you like my super-duper black gift ribbon? Yes, it's a cut-up bin liner! I thought it coordinated beautifully with the cheap-as-chips wrapping paper I bought today, and my quick-and-easy gift tag adds the perfect finishing touch. I think. Would you like one?

You will need:
* Neoprene in dark brown & white
* Green 4mm gift ribbon
* 3 red beads
* Gold cord

Step 1: Cut out the shapes and punch a hole in the top of both pieces

Step 2: Thread green gift ribbon through holes and tie in a knot, securing the gold cord at the same time

Step 3: Stick on 3 red beads, and you're done!

These tags are easy enough for the kids to make, and give great results every time. I use a white marker pen to write on the back of mine, but gold works just as well.

G I F T * B O X

I was asked to make a box for a Christmas present recently, so thought I'd photograph the process to post on here if it turned out ok. Thankfully it did! Unfortunately I can't show you the contents just in case the recipient is watching, so you will just have to use your imagination for that bit.

You will need:
* strong card
* contrasting decorative papers
* strong glue
* embellishments of your choice

Step 1: Measure the item and make a template. I made mine on the pc but you could use graph paper just as effectively. For the lid template, add 5mm to your box base (2.5mm each side) and reduce the depth of the sides. I made mine 2cms deep so plenty of the box is showing when the lid is on. I have not included glue tabs on the template as I find this makes the finished corners too bulky. We will be using the decorative paper to hold everything together instead.

Step 2: Draw round your template onto thick card and cut out with a craft knife. Score along fold lines and bend to set shape.

Step 3: Glue the uncut Lining paper to the inside of the box on the base only, leaving the sides unglued for now. Trim round the paper as shown.

Step 4: Glue the uncut Outer paper to the outside on the base only, leaving the sides unglued for now. Trim round the template as shown, leaving one glue tab at each corner, and a small margin round the top of the box for folding over later.

Step 5: Fold up the sides of the box and glue the Outer paper in place to hold corners together (remember to leave an opening when glueing the first side to allow for the last glue tab, see picture)

Step 6: When all Outer sides have been glued, fold top edge over to inside and glue down. Now glue the Lining to the sides to finish.

Step 7: Do the same for the Lid and add embellishments of your choice.

I used a coordinating velvet-like material for the lid of this box to add contrasting colour and texture, then finished with velvet ribbon, a button and feathers. If you wish to cover your box lid with a thicker material then I would recommend adding a little extra to your lid template to allow for the extra thickness.

Here's my humble offering for Our Craft Shop's decoration swap. It's not what I had originally planned to make...that one went a bit squiffy...and I really wanted to use this combination of fabric & ribbon, so...a scaled- down stocking it is. I'm actually quite pleased with the end result, and plan to make a few more for my own tree. Eventually. Here's the template and instructions if you're feeling inspired:

* scraps of fabric for boot
* scrap of satin for top
* small quantity of stuffing
* 1.5cm ribbon
* 7mm ribbon
* small length of cord for hanging

Step 1: Using the template cut out 2 boot shapes

Step 2: With right sides together, sew round outside leaving opening at top

Step 3: Turn right way out, fold over top edge to inside and slip-stitch down

Step 4: Lightly stuff, then cover top with satin and tuck inside boot. Slip-stitch in place (see pic)

Step 5: I sewed 1.5cm ribbon around top, then 7mm just below. Use your imagination here to make your stocking unique

Step 6: Attach ribbon or cord to top of boot for hanging

NOTE: commence all rounds with 3ch for first treble, and close all rounds with sc in first tbl

* 3.5mm crochet hook
* chocolate coins or small gifts to fill

Hat (from tip):
Using red make loop in yarn and work 5tbl in loop, sc to first tbl to form round. Pull loop tight to close end and continue as follows:

Rounds 1-7: tbl to last ch, work 3tbl in last ch (15sts at R7)
Round 8: (4tbl,work 2tbl in next ch) 3 times
Round 9: (5tbl, work 2tbl in next ch) 3 times

Continue increasing in this way until you have 27sts

Round 12: 1tbl, work 2tbl in next ch, 5tbl, tbl2tog, 10tbl, tbl2tog, 5tbl, work 2tbl in last ch.
Rounds 13-14: as R12

~ change to white eyelash wool ~

Rounds 15-16: tbl in every ch. Fasten off.

Bobble:
Make loop in yarn and work 10tbl into loop, sc to first tbl to form round and pull loop tight to close end. Work 1 more round of tbl. Fasten off. Fill with a marble or other round weight if you have it, or stuffing (scraps of the same yarn works well), then thread loose end through sts and gather up tight to form bobble. Attach to tip of hat.

Hanging Loop:
Using red make 30ch ring. Fasten off and attach to top of Hat using loose ends.

Alternatively, hang from tree using decoration hooks.

B I R D * F E E D E R

Spare a thought for our feathered friends during the cold spell with this quick and easy kids' project.

You will need:
* Pine Cones
* String
* Peanut Butter
* Dried fruit, nuts or bird seed

Tie a long length of string to the top of the pine cone. Squish peanut butter between the scales of the cone, then push dried fruit & nuts into the gaps. If using bird seed you can simply roll the cone over the seads so they stick.

It works...YAY!

Have you ever tried holding your breath until midnight? Well, that's exactly what I was doing last night while I waited for that first Advent Calendar window to open. You see, I thought I'd be clever this year and automate the windows so I'm not up 'til midnight every night like I was last year, and...it worked!!!

Only problem is though, my programming skills do not extend to Facebook script, which means I have to post each new window by hand over there, which means...yes you've guessed it...I shall be up 'til midnight every night this year too!

Oh well, I'm so excited about Christmas this year that I'll probably be up anyway. My 'presents-to-make' list is growing daily, so I doubt I'll be getting much sleep at all until they're finished and wrapped under the tree. More about those in the next few days, when I get my breath back.

I've decided the easiest thing to do is give you the code for both versions and...err...let you decide!

* Black Shrinkies (3 small sheets)
* Silver or white pen
* Scissors

Step 1: Cut each Shrinkie sheet into 2cm strips widthways, and then into 3 pieces as shown. You will need 28 domino pieces in total

Step 2: Mark up each domino (see Guide below)

Step 3: Cook Shrinkie according to manufacturer's instructions on the packet.

These wine glass charms are a great way to use up all those odd beads you've been saving!

You will need:
* Gold or silver beading wire
* Six gold or silver headpins
* Six contrasting beads
* Bead caps & complimentary beads
* Sead beads
* Round nose pliers

Step 1: Cut a length of wire approximately 12cm long and bend one end into a loop. Shape the wire around the neck of a bottle or a large glue stick to form a circle

Step 2: Thread sead beads onto the wire until it is covered, leaving enough free at the end to bend into another loop (see pic). Make five more loop like this.

Step 3: Cut another length of wire and bend one end into a coil (see pic), then bend the wire in the opposite direction to form a Shepherd's Hook shape. Repeat this stage with another 5 lengths of wire, ensuring all clasps are the same size when bent

Step 4: Thread your chosen contrasting beads onto the headpins. Trim any excess then bend into a small loop at the top

Step 5: Thread the loop of the headpin onto your half-finished clasp (see pic) then thread the end of the clasp through one loop of the sead bead wire

Step 6: Bend the remaining end of the clasp into a loop small enough to pass through the opposite loop of the sead bead hoop (this will hold the charm closed)

ch chain or stitch
sc single crochet or slip stitch
dc double crochet
inc2dc increase by working specified number of stitches in next ch
dc2tog decrease by working specified number of stitches together

NOTE:
commence all rounds with 2ch for first dc, and close each round with sc in first dc

You will need:
* small amount of 4-ply
* small amount of eyelash wool
* 2mm crochet hook

Mittens (from cuff):
Using main colour make 18ch ring and work in rounds as follows:

Round 1: 17dc, inc2dc, sc to first dc to close round
Round 2: inc2dc, 18dc, sc to first dc
Round 3: 19dc, inc2dc, sc to first dc
Round 4: inc2dc, 20dc, sc to first dc

Shape thumb:
Round 5: work 4dc and place marker on 4th dc, skip 14dc, 4dc, sc to first dc to form round
Rounds 6-7: dc
Round 8: dc3tog, dc2tog, dc3tog.
Fasten off and close opening using loose end.

Shape hand:
Round 5: Rejoin yarn to round 5 and work 1dc in same ch as marked dc, work remaining 14dc, work 1dc in next ch (5th ch of thumb), sc to first dc to form round (16sts)

Rounds 6-8: dc
Round 9: ♥ 6dc, dc2tog, repeat from ♥ once more
Round 10: ♥ 5dc, dc2tog, repeat from ♥ once more
Round 11: ♥ 4dc, dc2tog, repeat from ♥ once more
Fasten off and close opening using loose end.

Trim:
Using eyelash wool or other fluffy wool, work 2 rows of dc around edge of mitten. Fasten off.

You may find it easier using a larger hook for the trim, and only 1 round of dc.

Thread loose end through remaining stitches and gather up tight to close opening

Pom Pom:
Step 1: Thread a wool needle, then holding it together with a pencil (see pic) wrap another long length of wool around both approx. 20 times.

Step 2: Break yarn and pull needle through, leaving the threaded wool between the loops around the pencil. Tie both ends together as tight as you can, and slip loops off pencil.

Step 3: Trim loops to form Pom Pom, leaving threaded ends uncut for finishing.

To finish:
Sew seam using loose end. With a contrasting colour, blanket stitch round edge of hat to neaten. Using the same contrasting colour embroider snowflakes around colour band, as shown. Attach Pom Pom to top of hat using threaded ends.

If you've made my Advent Diary then you're probably wondering what to do with all those left-over matchsticks! If a galleon ship doesn't appeal then here's another idea...

This project featured in Our Craft Shops' Advent Calendar 2008

You will need:
* Safety matches (heads removed)
* Thin card
* Ribbon or cord for hanging
* Gold or silver spray paint
* Embellishments of your choice
* Glue

Only use safety matches
Ensure all heads are removed from the matches before letting children start on this project.

Step 1: Cut two small circles from thin card approximately 2cm in diameter. A 5p coin makes a good template for this.

Step 2: Cover the inside of the first circle with glue then stick matches around the outside edge, as shown.

Step 3: Spray the whole thing and the second cardboard circle with gold or silver spray paint.

Step 4: When dry, attach a long length of ribbon to the centre for hanging.

Step 5: Glue second circle to other side.

Step 6: Decorate the centre of your Matchnik with embellishments of your choice.

I created this card for my Mum, after a particularly trying year, to show her how much she meant to me.

This project featured in Our Craft Shops' Advent Calendar 2008

Glue a to front of b aligning bottoms. Fold d upwards along dotted line and glue top edge to b aligning tops. Push d through hole in c and glue c in place

You will need:
* free door template
* A5 card
* Thin cardboard (eg. cereal box)
* wood-effect sticky-back plastic
* Gold or silver card
* glue

Door Card:
Step 1: print out the door template then cut out the door panels from thin cardboard

Step 2: fold an A5 card in half, then cover the front in wood-effect sticky-back plastic

Step 3: cover the door panels in sticky-back plastic and stick to front of card

Letterbox:
Step 4: cut all letterbox pieces from gold card and assemble as shown (see pic)

Step 5: cut out the envelope on the door template and fold as indicated, then write the recipients name on the front before sticking to inside of letterbox flap

Step 6: glue letterbox to centre panel of door card

Wreath
Step 7: cut out the wreath base from thin card and cover with whatever tiny embellishments you have to hand.

I made these roses from 4mm gift ribbon, then any tiny bits I could find including foil curls cut from a kitchen scourer!

Four little dolls, four numb bums, and a concrete catwalk...

They would always come to my house because we had the biggest garden. Excitedly they'd sit down with their bulging bags of clothes, eager to preview their latest 'Original' outfits (even back then labels mattered!) Oh I had originals too: there was the outfit she came in of course, and the odd bits and pieces my Mum could afford or that my friends didn't want. Mostly though my little bag consisted of clothes that Mum and Nan made for me. Just knitted stuff, nothing special.

Then one day Mum taught me how to knit, and soon I was making my own dolls' clothes. As my eagerness to be an adult grew so did my creations until eventually I was wearing them, and my beloved Sindy became a distant memory.

Oh, if only I'd known back then what 'Original' really meant...if only I still had those dolls' clothes today. Because now I am a Mum I realise that each and every one was priceless...they were made for ME!

I returned home from holiday recently to discover a Facebook friend of mine had died the day before we left. I thought it was strange that I'd been thinking about him during the holiday...made sense why when I heard the news.

He wasn't somebody I'd ever met in person, in fact he was from the US so I was never likely to meet him. I still classed him as a friend though, and I still enjoyed his company in our crazy Facebook playground, and I still shed a tear when I discovered the news on a mutual friend's wall.

It's my first facebook death, or at least the death of someone I knew 'personally'. It was hard to take in at first, double-checking it was our mutual friend they were talking about and not some ancient celebrity with the same name . When I looked on his wall the confirmation was overwhelming: pages and pages of tributes left by friends, some like me whom he'd never met, all devastated by the news. He was only 41.

I hope his account will remain for many months yet, so we can all still visit from time to time. Who needs a creepy grave when such a wonderful tribute has risen naturally from the hearts of his friends.

This is the beautiful side of facebook. This is the caring, sharing side of facebook. This is the side of facebook I wish the doubters could see.

Like being blind

About five years ago, my roller-coaster ride took a sharp turn left. Trapped inside a loveless marriage, with two children we were both committed to, I had no place left to go. So I took refuge inside 'The Cloud', this crazy playground we call the internet, and from then on everything started to make sense to me.

I simply adored this new dimension I'd fallen into. I loved the way I could go anywhere, talk to anyone, BE anyone. It made perfect sense to me why I felt so at home inside this world...people actually liked me!

It's easy for me to see why this was, and still is the case. I find it's always the absence of something that brings clarity, and for me it's the absense of speech online that makes it work. It gives me a chance to think before responding. In fact, I can leave it days before posting a reply and not be considered rude, whereas in life each time I open my mouth I run the risk of making another enemy.

Just like a blind man 'sees' in a totally different way, those of us with vision who interact inside the Cloud are 'listening' in a totally different way...because it's just silence, isn't it? But what makes the internet so exquisite for me is that you will never know if the person you are 'talking' to is blind, deaf or black, unless they chose to tell you. Inside the Cloud we have no bodies, just our hearts and souls.

If this man didn't tell you he is blind,
would you know?

Nobody is forced to interact with anybody online. If you don't like what you are seeing or reading you can simply walk away, often without offending. Some will have already given up reading this for example, and I am flattered you're still here. Thank you! Unlike any other place on the planet, the Cloud gives us total freedom of choice, and a tremendous sense of worth when people do pay attention to what we have to say.

Common interests bind us and define us online. In the outside world, stereotypes force us all into little boxes we don't want to be in, but inside the Cloud we chose our own box. That's why it's so bloody comfortable, and why so many of us are drawn into it daily like moths round a lamp.

To me, the Cloud is a pool of perfect sense. It is inevitable, and I will explain more about that another time when I have the head for it. If you're still interested in what I have to say then why not follow me?

Those of you who've been here before probably won't recognise the place. That's because the last year changed me more than I could ever explain with words, so I had to reflect it some other way.

Those who have known me for many years will see immediately I am not the person I used to be. She's still in there somewhere but she's not coming out again until she loses the chintz!

Those who don't know me are about to discover a person I've only just met too. So if I take any wrong turns on this next leg of my 'journey of discovery' then I apologise. Remember though, nobody is making you follow me, but you are more than welcome to if you want to. It's nice to have the company :o)

Many years ago I had this crazy idea about creating a craft group. I called it the Craft Shop and geared it towards craft sellers like me, and for a while it was successful.

Then circumstances beyond my control left us without a suitable venue to showcase our wares, and so the group naturally evolved into something different.

These days it's just a bunch of friends who happen to meet online. I still have big ideas if the truth be told, but right now I'm so grateful it is what I need it to be. Just friends.

The Craft Shop is not currently accepting new members. I'll let you know as soon as that changes :o)

Like many things I do, my Advent Diary has a far deeper meaning to me than I could ever explain on here. When I started mine in 2007 it was just creative inspiration, fed by my wonderful friends in the group. Today, as I read back over where I was then, it's a poignant reminder of how far I've come, and my wonderful friends in the group helped get me through it.

I do hope you share in the experience with me this year, and the next. It really is...erm, wonderful!

This project featured in Our Craft Shops' Advent Calendar 2008

You will need:
* free diary printables
* 25 empty match boxes
* patterned paper for covering
* ribbon or wire (for hanging)
* stick on numbers, or labels & pen
* embellishments of your choice
* glue

Step 1: print out the diary printables onto paper, then score between blue lines to create folds before cutting out each diary (alternatively, see Quick & Easy below)

Step 2: fold diaries consertina-fashion, then glue the backs of page 1 to the front cover, the back of page 2 to page 3, and page 4 to the back cover. You should now have a little book (see pic)

Step 3: cover each matchbox sleeve with decorative paper. You can line the insides of the box as well if you wish

Step 4: add numbers to the front of each box using peel-offs, stamps, punches, or whatever grabs your imagination. These labels (shown) were cut from acetate then numbered with a permanent marker, and backed with decorative paper.

Step 5: make a hole in the top of the matchbox and attach ribbon or wire for hanging. If you are using labels, attach these to the loop before securing to the box. You can add beads to the wire at this stage as well

Step 6: finally, pop each diary into its box and hang on the tree.

Quick & Easy Booklets
This method uses plain A4 paper to make several booklets in one go:

1. Fold over 3cm along shortest edge of an A4 sheet 2. Fold 'consertina-fashion' until you have folded the sheet into 8 pieces 3. Trim last piece to same width as the rest 4. Cut folded strip into 4cm lengths 5. Glue inside backs of each piece together to form a book 6. Cover outside with decorative paper

I had hoped for more of an event for them, but it seems everyone around us had their own plans, which didn't include us.

Maybe it never occured to any of them that we might actually need some support on this first 'special' day after...you know.

Or perhaps they knew that the three of us would do just fine.

The perfect move...

I've spent years tearing my world apart looking for love. I ripped out pages and pages, then stuck them back into perfectly symmetrical patterns, constantly searching for that elusive yin-yang balance.

Logic told me it was there somewhere. You only had to look at our 'handmade with love' kids to know it must be there. All I needed was for him to remind me what it looked like so I could remember how to love him back, but it didn't matter how loud I shouted he just would not listen!!!

Then all of a sudden...silence. Not the deafening silence I was used to, but one that comes from watching someone else tear your world apart looking for love. It's a silence that totally overwhelms you, because that's all you've got left when you're robbed of everything you believed in.

With nothing left to tear apart, life became perfectly simple after that. Everything started falling into place, all those little cliches started making sense, and right there in the ruins I finally found it. Bummer!

Oh well, maybe a shining Knight will come and shuffle it all back the right way for me one day. You game..?

The rules are simple, and mastering the game is easy when you know how: try to always give and take, and if it crosses the line don't go back.

There I was trying to work out if this is the end of an era or merely the beginning, when I realised I would never know that until I started moving forward.

That's when I decided if I can't prove it to him I'll prove it to the rest of the world instead. Except I haven't a clue what I want to prove yet!

So I figured this is as good a place as any to find out, and you've all been nagging me for long enough anyway, so why not start the marble rolling with a blog.

OK, I suppose I should acknowledge if it wasn't for him writing the loop that stopped me going loopy this game would never have made it out of my head. It did only take him 5 minutes to write though, so that's all the credit he's getting.

The important thing is, in those 5 minutes he didn't just do me a favour, he showed me where I was going wrong, and I am grateful. That little bit of code has served me well too so watch this space, cos' there's plenty more where this came from!
